A cricket is a roofing term for a small structure built behind a chimney to help water run off instead of getting stuck. It’s framed with lumber, shingles, and metal flashing to keep water moving and prevent leaks.
We get a lot of calls about leaks in the home near chimneys—and 9 out of 10 times, it’s because there’s no cricket. Without one, the slope of the roof hits the flat backside of the chimney and creates the perfect spot for water to pool. Add in ice, pine needles, and debris, and now you’ve got a prime area for water intrusion.
