Annual Furnace Check-up/Lunch with Darlene.

Darlene had a bad cold today, but at 102 years old, that didnt stop her. She served up a small feast, while forcing me to clean my plate, and then some.
We then ate ice cream and drank coffee while talking about football, traveling, grain prices, weather, and jobs. She knows alot about husker sports and could probably host her own sports show. I asked about her first job, where she told me she made 107 dollars a month as a bookkeeper, and a nice "going out" dress cost .95 cents back then.
Last night she went to her son Doug's 80th birthday. She just laughs at how crazy that sounds.
She leaves her thermostat set to 62!! But I did talk her into moving it up a few degrees. Smart as a whip, kind as they come, tough as nails, and a tremendous pleasure to know.
I can't wait until the next visit....

Dear Friends,

You all know me as a writer, but you may not know that I work for an HVAC (heating & cooling) company.

And since you all (hopefully) trust me, I want to let you in on a little something…

From where I sit, I have the inside scoop on the secrets small service company owners are keeping

Let’s start with a likely story:

Something in your house stops working.
The light switch.
The dishwasher.
The furnace. (My specialty!)
You have no clue how to fix it, so you call in help. (Yes, please call in professionals!)
You call the local guy that everyone recommended on your town page.

The tech comes in.
He takes a few minutes, maybe a half hour or so to determine the issue.
Tells you it’s an easy fix.
The guy goes out to his truck and finds the part he needs, repairs the issue, and is out within 1-2 hours.
He sends you the bill… $362.
You look up the part.
It sells on Amazon for $24.
So why are you being charged $362???

It seems like a lot.
He’s being sneaky and keeping details from you.

As an insider
I’ll tell you what he won’t.

Truth is, he probably came to your house on an emergency call when he was in the middle of overseeing a project he had four towns over. He had to burn the gas money to get to you as soon as possible to help you out. (Yeah he’s a sucker for local peeps)

He doesn’t want you to know how much he has to pay in workers compensation and liability just to step foot in your home.

He doesn’t want to tell you about the cost of overhead, including his office workers (That’s me!)

He doesn’t want to tell you about his vehicle insurance, about the money he’s put in to schooling and training, about the thousands of hours it took him to gain a license, about the fees he pays annually to keep up his accreditation.

He won’t tell you that you can’t do this on your own without compromising your safety.

But also.

He doesn’t want you to know that he goes home every night and worries about the elderly woman, the single mom, the terminally ill customer whose work he comped because he couldn’t stand seeing them go without.

He doesn’t tell you that he lays in bed sleepless, hoping and praying that he’s charging enough to keep his business afloat.

To provide for his family all the while charging a fair price for his work.

No… Your guy is not being completely honest.
But if he was, I’m pretty sure you’d find it a lot easier to fork over the money to a good, honest man just trying to make a living.

So the next time something stops working in your house and you call in a small business professional, take a minute to appreciate the sneaky secrets he’s not willing to share.

Because if you knew the truth,

I’m pretty sure you’d understand the true value of having a guy like him to count on♥️
