Here in Liberal, our history is shaped by the people who dedicate their lives to serving others and making a lasting impact. That's what Local Legend Wednesday is all about.
This week, we're honored to recognize Gary Cornelsen.
Few names in Kansas high school athletics are as respected as Coach Cornelsen's. During his remarkable career at Liberal High School, he built a legacy of excellence that reached far beyond wins and championships.
As head football coach, Gary compiled an incredible 118-17 record, leading the Redskins to four Kansas 5A State Championships (1992, 1994, 1995, and 1997), along with multiple state runner-up finishes. His teams became a model of consistency and excellence across Kansas.
His success didn't stop on the football field.
For more than 30 years, Coach Cornelsen led Liberal's track and field program to unprecedented success. From 1991 to 2004, the boys captured an astounding 14 consecutive state championships, while the girls won 10 state titles in 11 seasons between 1994 and 2004. Altogether, his football and track programs earned 28 Kansas State Championships, making him one of the most successful multi-sport high school coaches in Kansas history.
Beyond the championships, Coach Cornelsen helped develop generations of student-athletes. Many went on to compete at the collegiate level, with several advancing to professional careers in the NFL and NBA. His influence reached far beyond athletics, instilling discipline, teamwork, and a standard of excellence that shaped countless lives.
In recognition of his extraordinary contributions, Liberal High School renamed its stadium, track, practice fields, and weight room the Gary Cornelsen Sports Complex in 2011—a lasting tribute to a coach whose impact on Liberal athletics will be felt for generations.
Thank you, Coach Cornelsen, for the legacy you've built and the countless lives you've influenced.
