Some software projects are really people projects.

Keith Downing, one of our Developers at APAX, recently wrote about a project that started with an old coworker, a shared office, and years of trust.

The client had outgrown a core process built on spreadsheets, off-the-shelf tools, manual approvals, vendor coordination, and QuickBooks entries. Their team was making it work, but one missed step could create billing mistakes, client issues, or slowdowns that were hard to trace.

That’s a tooling problem, not a people problem.

So Keith and the APAX team helped build a custom platform that brings requests, approvals, vendor coordination, and QuickBooks invoice syncing into one place.

What made the project meaningful wasn’t just the technical solution. It was the trust behind it. Two years of discovery, iteration, honest conversations, tradeoffs, and problem-solving went into building something that actually fit the way the client works.

As Keith put it: “The software built by people who genuinely care about each other tends to turn out better.”
