Great SAT Class last night! We focused on Sentence Completion questions; namely, getting students to notice adjectives and adverbs (ie words that describe) and think about WHY the test creators added-in those words when they were writing the test (spoiler: to make the right answer right and the wrong answers wrong).
In this case, I guarantee the sentence originally stated "Annie Dodge Wauneka worked to promote public health." Why was the adverb "continuously" added after the fact? To make "persistent" the right answer.
Teaching students to notice the use of certain words and to think about the author's intent in using those words is a critical skill for both the SAT and for life.

UC’s Test-Free Experiment Isn’t Going Well (opinion) 01/07/2026

Of course it isn't: eliminating standardized testing requirements was nothing more than moralistic grandstanding. The SAT and ACT were never the issue; rather, they EXPOSED the issues within our education system and the messenger was shot. In its place, we now have a system where admissions counselors can admit students based on the most arbitrary of reasons ("his essay really touched me")... or excuses (never mind that his grandfather's name is on a campus building).
It's time for the UC system to admit the obvious: there is less equity in subjective metrics than objective ones.

UC’s Test-Free Experiment Isn’t Going Well (opinion) It’s become all too apparent that high school grades are insufficient in signaling college preparedness.
