🟣 Paronychia is an infection or inflammation of the skin around the nail.
➟ It usually affects the side or base of a fingernail or toenail and often starts after a small break in the skin, such as nail biting, picking, trimming too deeply, hangnails, ingrown nails, or repeated wet work.
🟣 Common signs and symptoms
➟ Redness and swelling around the nail
→ The skin next to the nail becomes inflamed, swollen, and sore.
➟ Pain or tenderness
→ Touching the area can hurt, and the finger or toe may feel warm.
➟ Pus pocket or small abscess
→ A yellow or white pocket of pus may form near the nail fold, especially in acute bacterial paronychia.
➟ Nail changes in longer or repeated cases
→ The nail may become discolored, misshapen, damaged, or partly lifted if the problem keeps coming back.
🟣 Early management
➟ Warm soaks may help mild early cases
→ Soaking can sometimes reduce discomfort and swelling in minor cases.
➟ Keep the area dry and protected
→ Avoid repeated water exposure, nail picking, and further trauma.
➟ Do not squeeze or cut it yourself
→ This can worsen the infection or push it deeper. If pus builds up, a doctor may need to drain it safely.
🟣 When to seek medical care
➟ Increasing redness, swelling, or severe pain
➟ Visible pus or worsening abscess
➟ Fever or spreading redness
➟ No improvement, repeated infections, or nail damage
→ These signs may mean the infection needs medical treatment, and sometimes drainage or medicines are required.
🟣 Important note
➟ Paronychia can affect both fingers and toes
→ Acute cases are often bacterial and come on quickly, while chronic cases may develop more slowly and can be linked to repeated moisture exposure or yeast/fungal involvement.
🟣 Medical disclaimer
This note is for general education only and is not a diagnosis. If you have severe pain, pus, spreading redness, fever, or a worsening nail infection, please consult a qualified doctor for proper evaluation and treatment.
