Unfortunately, millions of individuals spend a significant amount of time protecting their emotions which means that they exert a great deal of energy trying to keep safe from harm. They are in constant defense mode which presents as aggressive, standoffish and self-centered.

They struggle in relationships because they have not learned how to cope with negative emotions. Coping with negative emotions enables individuals to deal effectively with difficult situations. Coping requires processing and facing difficulty with the goal of growing and becoming healthier.
