Governor Snyder is expected to sign a gutted version of the Workforce Opportunity Wage Act. How did the act move from a ballot initiative to SB 1171, a bill altered so heavily that it’s lost the intent of the petitioners? I interview Daniel Tucker, captain of Restaurant Workers of America and manager of Lansing Brewing Company and Pete Vargas, campaign manager of One Fair Wage Michigan. Produced by MiLatinx.
May 21, 2018- MICHIGAN: One Fair Wage Campaign turns in approximately 378,000 signatures to the Bureau of Elections in Lansing today. The campaign seeks to gradually raise Michigan’s minimum wage for all workers to $12 an hour. It does not eliminate tipping. “It’s time for a fair wage for everyone,” said Tracy Pease, a server from Hazel Park. “Some people do just fine with our current system, but too many workers like me face harassment and uncertainty. This proposal will allow me to keep my tips while having a wage that allows me to plan ahead and qualify for loans that will help me have the opportunity to get ahead.”
