Our partners: Tenacious women of Churu
Indigo Tales Summer/ Fall 2018 collection scarves are made by women artisans in the village of Churu, Rajasthan, India. These 300 women were left to fend for themselves and their children, without a source of livelihood, when their husbands left to find economic opportunities in other countries. They were organized, trained and led by Amrita, an enterprising entrepreneur from Churu to form an NGO called Disha Shekhawati. The women are skilled in various forms of tie and dye and work hard to make beautiful pieces every day in the extremely harsh climate that Churu experiences (50 degrees Celsius right now!). The tie and dye work helps empower the women by providing them with not only a stable source of income but also a sense of identity.
