Please join us in congratulating Jason Hess on his appointment as President of Horst Excavating.
With more than 30 years of experience in the sitework industry and over 13 years with Horst Excavating, Jason has helped shape the company through his leadership, dedication, and commitment to excellence. His appointment reflects not only his experience, but Horst Excavating's commitment to developing leaders from within.

There are a lot of people who can run a job site. There are far fewer people who can lead one in a way that truly impacts the people around them.
Jon Schall is one of those people.
What makes Jon's story especially meaningful is that he did not start his career as a superintendent. Jon joined Horst Excavating after high school in 2003, 24 years ago, as a laborer and worked his way through the ranks to become the leader he is today. His journey is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and commitment he has brought to our team throughout his career.
What makes Jon special is not just his knowledge, work ethic, or ability to keep a project moving forward. It is the kind of person he is, beyond the job description. He leads with humility, patience, and a calmness that brings confidence to the entire crew around him. No matter how stressful or difficult a situation becomes, Jon stays level-headed and focused, helping his team navigate challenges without losing sight of the people beside him.
After speaking with everyone from the laborers and equipment operators on Jon’s crew to the project manager he works alongside, one thing became incredibly clear: the respect people have for him runs deep across every level of the team. Not only do they trust him as a superintendent, but they also genuinely enjoy working with him. The people around Jon described him as fantastic to work with, highly detail-oriented, easy to get along with, and someone who can truly drive a job forward. His crew knows they can go to him for support, guidance, or help whenever it is needed because Jon always takes the time to listen and step in however he can.
They also spoke about how Jon maintains strong relationships with contractors, handles difficult situations professionally, and consistently keeps projects moving without constant oversight. That kind of trust is not given lightly in this industry. It is earned over time through consistency, leadership, and character.
What also stands out about Jon is that despite all of the experience and leadership he brings, he remains humble. No task is beneath him. He is willing to jump in wherever help is needed. mentor younger team members, solve problems alongside his crew, and lead by example every single day. The people around him know that he is not just there to direct the work, he is there to support the team behind it.
The construction industry needs more people like Jon. The kind of leaders who make long days easier, difficult moments manageable, and the people around them better because of the way they lead.
At Horst Excavating, we know our success is built by people like Jon Schall, and we are incredibly grateful for everything he brings to our team, our projects, and the people around him every single day.
