We started in 1983 when most retailers were still running paper ledgers. Since then we've watched retail go through more seismic shifts than most industries will see in a lifetime.

Here's what four decades on the front line actually taught us:

1. Complexity is the enemy of the shop floor.
The best POS system is the one your staff can use without a manual - forget which one's got the most features! If checkout slows down because of the software, the software has already failed.

2. Small retailers don't have small problems.
A boutique with 3,000 SKUs has the same inventory headaches as a chain. SMB owners just have fewer people to solve them. The tools need to work harder, not cost more.

3. Support matters more than software.
We've seen retailers abandon perfectly good systems because no one picked up the phone. Technology is only as reliable as the people standing behind it.

4. The retailers who thrive plan ahead while the rest react.
The ones still standing after 35 years aren't the biggest, they're the ones who had visibility into their numbers before problems became crises.

5. One size never fitted anyone.
A liquor store and a bicycle shop have almost nothing in common operationally. We learned early that flexibility isn't a feature, it's the foundation.

We're still learning. But after 35 years, we're pretty confident we know what retailers actually need.

Summer is one of the busiest times of year for many retailers, which means now is the perfect opportunity to make sure your POS is ready to keep up.

Before foot traffic increases, it's worth asking yourself three simple questions:

☀️ Is your inventory accurate and updating in real time?

☀️ Can your team confidently find the information they need without constantly asking for help?

☀️ Do your reports give you a clear picture of what's happening in the business so you can make decisions quickly?

Peak seasons have a habit of exposing weaknesses that go unnoticed during quieter periods. The good news is that identifying those gaps early gives you time to fix them before they start affecting customer experience, staff confidence, or sales.

The retailers who navigate busy seasons most smoothly are often the ones who prepared before the rush arrive.

Not sure whether your current setup is ready for the summer rush? Take a closer look now and give your team the support they need before peak season arrives.

A lot of retail stores slowly end up with systems piled on top of each other.

One for stock. One for payments. One for reports. One for customer data.

At first it works. Then over time, everything starts feeling slower, harder to manage, and more frustrating than it should be.

We’re seeing more hardware and convenience stores simplify things and move toward POS systems that actually work together properly.

Less hassle behind the counter. Better visibility across the business. Faster day-to-day operations.

That’s exactly what we focus on at The General Store.

If you’re curious to see how your current setup compares, happy to show you around the platform.

As a retailer, your reports are intended to provide accuracy.

They should offer a reliable view of performance, highlight trends, and support confident decision-making across the business.

However, an increasing number of store owners we speak to are finding that their reports don't always reflect what is happening on the shop floor.

Sales figures may require verification, inventory levels may not align with physical stock, and key metrics can feel open to interpretation rather than certainty.

Over time, the need to double-check information introduces hesitation into everyday decisions, slowing momentum and reducing confidence in the data being use.

Industry conversations suggest that this is less about isolated errors and more about how systems are structured. When data is spread across multiple tools or not fully aligned, even small discrepancies can create a disconnect between what is reported and what is experienced in-store.

As a result, many retailers are beginning to place greater importance on systems that provide a single, consistent view of their operations. The goal is no longer just to generate reports, but to trust them.
