Study shows severe shortage of affordable housing in La. 02/19/2024

With the recent increase of squatters in SWLA, we want to know what is in the works regarding affordable housing. A quick pass through mid Lake Charles, which contains a large portion of our low income rentals, might have you asking the same question. A lot of these homes are still in despair but being rented. For their own protection, these homeowners are refusing to enter into lease agreements. People are paying $1000 deposit with $1000 first month, only to realize the home has a leaking roof, is infested with rodents and/or bugs, has mold/mildew, is lacking insulation and is basically unlivable. Without the protection of a lease, tenants have no option but to stay in the unlivable conditions or come up with another $2000 minimum to move. This practice is creating a vicious cycle that is worsening the livelihood of our elderly and less fortunate community members.

Study shows severe shortage of affordable housing in La. The plight of the homeless is a chronic one that many have tried to combat over the years. Yet, a study says it's worsening among the lowest of the low income.
