The competition stripe in surfing’s history dates back to the 1950’s and 60’s, when surfers were transitioning towards the nose of the surfboard, to ultimately hang ten toes over the edge. Stripes where soon airbrushed or resined into the front section of the board, about 12 to 15 inches from the nose, to indicate the rider being in the critical section of the surfboard while riding a wave! This became a useful practice during competition for judges to see the technique of the rider, as well as their poise! The surf shops and surfboard teams began making jackets and trunks, in their own color scheme, and would show up to the beach on competition morning wearing their cuts and patches! It made for an iconic minimalist look of the time that still holds true today! Check out our collection of comp boardshorts, and our comp II jacket, with the two stripes, that honor one of surfing’s past cultural developments!
Available in store in Laguna Beach, and online at thaliasurf.com!

We have some really classic and unique surfboards in the rafters of Thalia Surf Shop, and that’s because of Jim Cocores’ and Nick Cocores’ collection and preservation of surfing’s past. Randy Rarick Randy Rarick is a master surfboard builder, a longtime friend of the family, and has helped repair and restore many a surfboards for Jim, Nick and the shop. On Randy’s recent visit to California from Hawaii, we got him to sign a few 1970s surfboards he made! Next time you visit our retail store in Laguna Beach, look up from whichever surf mag you pulled out of our media section, and check the airbrushed wave on that single fin! Aloha Randy 🌺 !!
