What does “like treats like” really mean in homeopathy?
In their latest conversation about Homeopathy: Beyond Flat Earth Medicine by Dr. Timothy Dooley, Dr. Lisa Amerine and Dr. Mike Knapp discuss one of the central principles of homeopathy: the law of similars.
Homeopathy comes from the Greek roots homeos, meaning similar, and pathos, meaning suffering.
The basic idea is that a substance capable of producing certain symptoms in a healthy person may help a sick person experiencing a similar symptom pattern.
But the key word is similar.
It is not enough to say, “This person has a headache,” or “This person is vomiting,” or “This person has anxiety.”
Homeopathy looks for the details that make that person’s experience unique.
For example:
• Where is the pain?
• What does it feel like?
• What makes it better or worse?
• What else is happening at the same time?
• What is unusual or characteristic about this case?
Those details help guide the search for the best-fitting homeopathic medicine.
