📢 FRIDAY JULY 10th 6-9pm - write it down!
Join us at our next open house event in celebrating a new exhibition sharing new work from Chattanooga-based artist Judy Rushin-Knopf titled “A foothold, that is all”

(from the artist):

“A foothold, that is all

Meanwhile, I have found a ledge on which to catch my breath. Working repetitively and instinctively – like breathing – I have produced this group of weavings that represent a shift towards a slower practice focused on sustainability, depth, and well-being. They are a bridge to something I can’t yet identify.

For over twenty years I have held seven convictions. They are my compass.

Seven Convictions
1. The time invested in making the work conveys to those willing to invest the time seeing the work
2. Repetitive honing by hand may imbue an artwork with more humanity than a large painterly gesture
3. Small works are underrated
4. You can build something big from small parts (or cover large distances with small steps)
5. Painting is a long process of getting into and out of trouble
6. Allowing a work to lean into instability is an affirmation of life
7. I am inspired by the prospect of mutual generosity between the artist and viewer

Bio
Rushin-Knopf’s work has been featured in numerous gallery and museum exhibitions nationally and resides in museum and book art collections including University of Kentucky Art Museum, Florida State University Museum of Fine Art, Wofford College Museum of Fine Art, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, The Frick Fine Arts Library, Harvard Fine Arts Library, and the Kohler Art Library. She is represented by Ivy Brown Gallery in New York. Rushin-Knopf is also a collaborator with Carolyn Henne on the Comma project, which produces boxed editions of small sculptural objects.”

Join us ✨this Friday night✨ for the book release party for our very own Resident Studio Artist Anika Toro!

The celebration will take place in the community printshop during our opening house event on Friday April 17th from 6-9pm. The evening will be filled with poetry-forward works with the exhibition of Nurturing Nature by Ty Murray & Jazmin Witherspoon in the gallery, spoken poetry readings by Jazmin, and this book launch!

Anika will be present to chat and sign any books with one-of-a-kind hand-printed material items available with any book sold. Visitors will also be encouraged to participate in a fun found text/play with words experience in the printshop that lines with the book’s theme.

Anika Toro is a mixed media artist with a background in photography and collage. Her current work fuses narrative, serendipity, and playful experimentation into art that transforms familiar texts and images into unexpected expressions of creativity.

“Finding Joy: This mixed media art book takes selections from nine different copies of the same book, showcasing Anika’s transformative and playful approach to the original text. Each page spread uses hand-selected text, left unaltered from its original position. Through a process of erasure and blackout, Anika redacts everything except a newly found message, thought, idea, or poem, without adding any new text. Analog collages, paint, photography, embroidery, and more celebrate unique narratives, exploring creativity, spontaneity, and the profound moments that emerge from reimagining existing ideas.”

See you Friday!!
