The formal name of the black church of Búðir is Búðakirkja.
Its iconic appearance comes from the exterior wood being coated in pitch (tar) to protect it from the severe coastal weather, a practice similar to preserving a ship’s hull.
While the church has a mysterious appearance due to its isolated location and color, its associated folklore relates to more traditional Icelandic tales:
The location for the original 1703 church was supposedly determined by an old woman’s suggestion: a man was told to spin until dizzy, shoot three arrows, and build the church where a specific marked arrow landed.
The area around Búðir, including the nearby Búðahellir cave and lava field, is linked in folklore with tales of elves and hidden people (huldufólk), not black magic.🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹 🇮🇸 📷
