This is our classic conversation course. We launch a semester long inquiry into zones both conventional (Is is a man’s world?) and not (What does feminism have to do with Marilyn Monroe and vice versa?), both contemporary (How do you measure the loss of RBG on the Supreme Court?) and historical (What was—and is—The Woman Question?)

THE ESSENTIAL WORK OF WOMEN/PANDEMIC 2020-21: REVIEWING AND REVALUING SITUATIONS
This course is, as you might guess, inspired by both realities and headlines born of
the pandemic that hit worldwide early in 2020—stripping bare many of our illusions
about the lives we live in context, the work that keeps the world going—no matter.
By summer of 2020, the truth was out: story after story, the unsung work of women. Our studies will begin where we are, but we won’t be stopping there.

REPRESENTATIONS OF WOMEN IN POPULAR CULTURE
This course has been around! It’s vital stuff: the business of representation is alive and well—fueled as always by s*x and violence, even if repackaged and remarketed with makeovers and twists.

R**E CULTURE – ROOTS, EVOLUTIONS, FACTS AND FICTIONS There is nothing simple or easy or incontrovertible or cool in R**e Culture.
Where shall we dig to locate its roots, trace its evolutions? Parse apart the reality from the myth?
In an address to a men’s conference, Andrea Dworkin boiled the subject down to powers practically guaranteed—"power exercised … institutionalized … protected …” Come study with us.

These are all words with screams built in—darkness, danger, fear ...
and history. There’s something very old here that’s somehow hung on.
Our course will pursue a dig into the telling past, but we will also study
the very time we’re in—and how gender melds with monstrous,
how constructions of femininity sit precariously on edges of witch, bitch,
w***e, she- devil, how female agency triggers alarm and accusation,
how the phenomenon of a pandemic alters permissions,
disrupts but at once reinforces order. 100% Online.
