Accuscale Models

Took a break and mussed up some old brick on this @waltherstrains HO built-ups Trainline 10th World Comics # 931-807. Added mortar lines and color variations along with some some water damage on the side (efflorescence) showing whitish leaching. Took the opportunity to open up a window upstairs too. Did you know that comic shops themselves only started showing up in the 1970s? Before then, comics were purchased elsewhere (newsstands, dime stores, soda and cigar shops, etc).

I often get asked how I paint my mortar joints on brick buildings. First, I paint the base brick color. When that is dry, I make a thin mix of a grayish-tan wash, which is roughly one part paint to 5 to 10 parts solvent. I use acrylic paints, so the solvent is either distilled water, or acrylic airbrush thinner or a mix thereof. Next, I test the mix, about the consistency of milk, on the wall to see if it beads up or flows into the cracks. Depending on the capillarity of the basecoat paint, that will vary - and require you to adjust the solvent mixture. I use a flat, wide brush (this one is synthetic) and want the paint to mostly stay in the mortar joints molded in the brick pattern. Note how the one small skipped spot just above the lower window eventually fills in with the wash flow - like magic. I use acrylic paint, because mistakes can be very easily wiped up with a damp sponge. Once dry, you just try again. No secrets, just modeling fun! Helpful..?

I always find something on a building that I can improve. Or a bit of paint that needs re-touching.

Some flowers and figures added. The lady upstairs is toasting her new flat with a cold beverage..! If you add lighting to your structures, light seeping out of joints and the structure walls “glowing” ruins the scale effect. Light-proofing the interior adds to the realism and takes your model up a step.
