Sustainability is an enterprise for companies that have minimal negative impact on the global or local environment. Environmental sustainability is also the process of making sure current processes that impact the environment are pursued with the conscious effort of keeping the environment as unspoiled as naturally possible. That said, SCD Probiotics’ mission is to be the premier developer and glo

A few years ago, SCD Probiotics had the opportunity to collaborate with Outreach International on a pilot project aimed at improving sanitation for rural communities in the Philippines that lacked access to traditional sewage infrastructure.

Working under the guidance of Dr. Musa Manga from UNC Chapel Hill, our probiotic technology was dosed into pit latrines to evaluate its effectiveness in real-world conditions. The results were extremely encouraging. Community members reported noticeable sludge reduction, improved odor control, and appreciated the simplicity of the application process.

Projects like this demonstrate how innovative, sustainable technologies can address everyday challenges in underserved communities. They also reinforce an important part of our mission at SCD Probiotics: bringing probiotic solutions to communities—both locally and around the world—where they can create meaningful, lasting change.

We're grateful to Outreach International and the participating communities for their partnership, and we look forward to pursuing similar initiatives in the future.

🌎 Earth Day comes around once a year, but the kind of work it talks about doesn’t.

At SCD, it’s always been about working with biology instead of against it. Using microbes to do what they already do best, whether that’s improving soil, helping break down waste, or supporting healthier systems overall.

Nothing flashy. Just a different way of approaching the same problems.

Over time, that adds up. Better balance, fewer inputs, and systems that hold up a little better on their own.

That’s really it. Earth Day is a reminder of what matters.
For us, it’s the same work we’ve been doing all along.
