God's Patience Tuesday, October 14, 2025

2 Peter 2:4-6
For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, held for judgment; and did not spare the ancient world, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; and if He condemned the cities of S***m and Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to ashes, having made them an example of what is coming for the ungodly

God hates sin. No matter how accepted it may be by a culture or nation, sin remains odious to God. Yet despite His holy fury at sin, God is also merciful and patient. “But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth” (Psalm 86:15). Rather than immediately sending the judgment and destruction that our sin deserves, God offers us examples and opportunities and warnings to encourage us to repent and return to Him. Yet these opportunities are not unlimited. Eventually if we insist on continuing in sin, we reach the point where the judgment comes. We should never mistake the patience of God for tolerance of sin. There is only one right time for us to turn to God in repentance, and that is immediately.

In a sermon titled “Today! Today! Today!” Charles Spurgeon said, “Today will not last for ever; a day is only a day. When days are longest shadows fall at last and night comes on. The longest life soon wanes into the evening of old age, and old age hurries to the sunset of the tomb. The thought of death has often brought men to decision. They tell us in the old histories that Peter Waldo, a certain eminent merchant, had lived a thoughtless, careless life, but as he walked the streets of Lyons his friend who was apparently in good health fell dead at his side, and Waldo at once sought the Lord, believed the gospel, and preached it to others.”

Today's Growth Principle
We should never presume that the patience of God means He will overlook our sin.

Comforted to Comfort Tuesday, September 23, 2025

2 Corinthians 1:2-5
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For just as the sufferings of Christ are ours in abundance, so also our comfort is abundant through Christ.

In every trial and hardship of life we have the promise of God's grace and comfort to sustain us. Even if we have no one else to help us, God is always with us.

The night before He was crucified Jesus told the disciples in the Upper Room that though He would be leaving, they would not be alone. “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it sees him not, neither knows him: but you know him; for he dwells with you, and shall be in you.” (John 14:16-17). As believers we always have the Holy Spirit to comfort and strengthen us.

It is also important for us to remember that God's plan and design is for us to take the same comfort we receive from Him and share it with others who are hurting. Comfort is not given to us for our own benefit alone. It is given to us to pass on and multiply. A. B. Simpson wrote, “You will have no test of faith that will not fit you to be a blessing if you are obedient to the Lord. I never had a trial but when I got out of the deep river I found some poor pilgrim on the bank that I was able to help by that very experience.” Each trial is an opportunity for us to learn and grow and mature in our own faith and be a better help to others.

Today's Growth Principle
The comfort we have received from God is also a vital resource for us to share with others.
