When Emotions Are Louder Than God

Scripture

Jeremiah 17:9 (KJV)
“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”

Devotional Thought

One of the hardest spiritual battles we face is learning to separate God’s voice from our emotions. Emotions are powerful. They can convince us that something feels right even when God has already told us it is wrong.

Sometimes we want something so badly that we silence the warnings God is giving us. Instead of listening to the quiet conviction of the Holy Spirit, we begin to listen to our feelings, our desires, and even the opinions of people who agree with what we already want.

This is how many people walk straight into situations God was trying to protect them from.

Emotions can make us believe that love is enough to fix something broken. Emotions can make us believe someone will change when they have shown no evidence of growth. Emotions can make us believe that going back will be different this time.

But God sees the whole picture.

Where we see potential, God sees patterns. Where we see possibility, God sees consequences.

God’s voice is often calm, quiet, and steady. Emotions, however, are loud and urgent. They push us to act quickly, to react impulsively, and to ignore wisdom.

Learning to walk with God requires spiritual discipline. It requires us to pause and ask a simple but powerful question:

“Is this my emotion speaking, or is this God guiding me?”

When we learn to quiet our emotions long enough to hear God clearly, we begin making decisions that bring peace instead of regret.

Prayer

Lord, help me not to be led by emotions alone. Teach me to pause and listen for Your voice before making decisions. When my feelings try to drown out Your wisdom, give me the strength to wait and seek Your direction. Let Your Spirit guide my choices so that my life reflects Your will and not just my impulses. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
