To give this idea the strongest emphasis, Jesus claimed that this knowledge was reserved for His Father only. If Jesus Himself at least during His earthly ministry did not know this day and hour, it emphasizes the foolishness of any later person making certain predictions regarding the prophetic timetable.

Though the Lord’s longsuffering love for the lost makes it seem that perhaps He delays His coming, the truth is that He will indeed come. And when Jesus does return, He will come at a time that will surprise many (as a thief in the night). The ultimate result of His coming will be a total transformation of this present world (in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat).

Paul went from knowing who God is (our Creator) to who we are (His offspring), to our responsibility before Him (to understand Him and worship Him in truth), to our accountability if we dishonor Him (judgment).

Paul didn’t preach a “soft” gospel. He boldly confronted the wrong ideas the Athenians had about God and confronted them with the reality of coming judgment.

Timothy needed to keep focused on the Word of God because man, by his natural instinct, does not want God’s revelation. He would rather hear what he wants to hear – something to scratch his itching ears.

This reminds us that the most popular teachers are not necessarily the most faithful teachers. We shouldn’t assume a teacher is scratching itching ears just because he is popular, but neither should we assume that he is faithful to God’s Word just because he is popular.
