One of the toughest leadership decisions is deciding who should be promoted on a team of high-performers.
I once worked with an organization that promoted one of their strongest technical leaders into a director-level role.
Everyone thought it was the obvious choice… they made fast decisions, solved complex problems independently, and consistently delivered results ahead of schedule.
A few months later, their manager called me frustrated that things weren’t going as smoothly as everyone hoped. The employee wasn’t failing in the new role, but they weren’t thriving either.
When we looked deeper at their TriMetrix, I saw that the work that energized them as an individual contributor was very different from the work they were being asked to do as a director.
The new role was asking them to use strengths that didn’t come as naturally and to spend MORE time on work that wasn’t energizing for them.
Success in a current role is important to consider, but it only tells part of the story. Understanding what their NEXT role requires day-to-day tells us the rest.

DISC tells you how someone drives. Motivators tell you what drives them.
But Acumen shows you what’s under the hood - AKA their ‘horsepower.’
It measures six different dimensions:

2. Practical Thinking - Focus on ex*****on and getting things done!
3. Systems Judgement - Strategic thinking and seeing the BIG picture
4. Sense of Self - Self-awareness and confidence
5. Role Awareness - Understanding their impact and where they fit
6. Self-Direction - Initiative and self-management skills
This is where it gets really useful!
Two people can have the same DISC style, but have completely different thinking patterns. One may naturally think strategically, while the other is more focused on ex*****on.
And you need both types of people on your team!
When you understand how someone actually thinks - how they process information, what they prioritize, how they approach problems - you get a much clearer picture of how they'll show up in a role.
