Iron metabolism is complicated but here’s what to know about inhibitors:
🥛Calcium
Reduces DMT1 activity
Decreases ferroportin function
Affects both heme & non-heme iron
Dose dependent (~300–600 mg most impactful)
🌾Phytates (grains, legumes)
Bind iron in gut → insoluble complexes
☕️Polyphenols (coffee, tea, cocoa)
Strongly inhibit non-heme iron
🏃🏿♂️High hepcidin (post-exercise window)
Blocks export into bloodstream and also remains high for about 24 hours following supplementation
There’s others too! Just remember, if we forget all together because we are trying to be perfect, than it definitely doesn’t get in our body!
Here’s my current protocol based on a Tues/ Thurs workout + Saturday long run schedule
Monday/W/Fr: easy miles or rest day+ one of these meals, only a one coffee day
