DEBARGE / STRANGE ROMANCE / 1981

as we all know, music has a habit of reminding us where we were at any given moment of our lives. One of the first times I was in Los Angeles as an adult, I was working the Soul Train dancer reunion… there I was on the way to the venue for soundcheck in my compact rental car driving down the 405, at dusk, with my iPod shuffling all of the funk i had collected over the years. Among the jams that drive, this song came up by a (virtually unknown at the time Motown released this LP) legendary family unit that I feel probably encapsulated what LA sounded like at the time. A BANGER. I managed to parallel park at the precise moment this song was fading, which is something else I love and go on and on about haha.

Anyway, “Strange Romance” now always reminds me of LA whenever I hear it.

Are there any songs your brain has attached to a specific memory? let me know.

FOUR TOPS / BABY I NEED YOUR LOVING / 1964

I could listen to this song a million times a day and it still wouldn’t lose its sheen. That might be the magic that was crafted back in Detroit at Motown / Hitsville USA with Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, the Funk Brothers and one of the best vocal groups we’ve ever witnessed, The Four Tops. Levi Stubbs, the lead on this one and most of their records, was/is one of the most dauntless voices ever recorded.

This is your reminder to listen to The Four Tops today!
