Florida Atlantic University hosted the 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝗦𝗖𝗘 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘂𝗺 in Boca Raton on March 12-14. It was a beautiful weekend for civil engineering students from 19 universities in Florida, Georgia, and Puerto Rico to gather and compete in a variety of engineering competitions.

𝗔𝗽𝗲𝘅 was pleased to once again support this event as a gold sponsor and provide judges for the 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿-𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. A partnership between the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Wood Council, APA – The Engineered Wood Association, and Simpson Strong-Tie, this competition challenges student teams to design and build an artistically creative two-story wood light-framed building that is sustainable, aesthetically pleasing, and structurally durable. Teams are scored on their calculations, BIM, and construction documents, as well as their Build Day performances.

The team from the 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝘂𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗶𝗰𝗼-𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘇 were the overall winners of this year’s Timber-Strong competition. Their design decisions were influenced by the challenge of transporting their construction materials via cargo boat. The judges reported that, in addition to a beautiful mural that wrapped around the entire structure, it was their unique construction that made their build stand out from the competition.

The 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗮 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 team took second place, and the third-place team from 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 made ASCE history as the first All-Women build team to compete in the Timber-Strong competition. Congratulations to these teams and to all who participated in this year’s event!
