Making Mississippi Greener

It was a great week of learning, interacting, and getting hot and thirsty as we completed the first phase of the Minority Farmers of The South Greener Mississippi Initiative with a tree planting kick-off in Silver City, Mississippi on Saturday, October 5, 2024.
The program began September 19, 2024, in Belzoni, Mississippi at the Randle Career Technical Center with 26 students participating in the introductory training program which covered such topics as introduction to urban forestry, tree identification, and tree planting techniques as well as career development discussions on such topics as effective communication skills, interviewing techniques, and speaking with confidence.
We concluded the program with the students engaging in two tree planting exercises. First, they planted potted seeds that they will nurture and grow to a point to be replanted outside. Each student got to name his/her tree. Then they worked with the staff of the Minority Farmers of The South to plant a tree on the school grounds that they will maintain and watch it grow. They named that tree, “Class of 2027” in honor of their graduation date.
