Some of the qualities that help you survive can also become the qualities that stop you from shining.
And I don’t mean that discipline, preparation, responsibility or resilience are bad.
Quite the opposite.
They may be the reason you got this far.
They may be the reason you built a career, became dependable, learnt how to handle pressure and stopped your life from falling apart.
But here’s the problem.
The skills that help you stay safe are not always the same skills that help you come alive.
A contestant recently told me she could do everything perfectly well in practice.
The walk was there.
The answers were there.
The preparation was there.
But the moment other people were watching, something changed.
She became more careful.
Her energy dropped.
Her personality pulled back.
Not enough to look obviously nervous.
Just enough that people could sense she was holding something back.
And careful can be useful in accounting.
It is less useful when you are trying to command a pageant stage. 👑
The issue was not that she needed more coaching.
She already knew what to do.
The issue was that she was trying to control the moment instead of being in it.
She was checking the answer while giving it.
Monitoring the walk while walking.
Thinking about how she was coming across instead of actually connecting with the people in front of her.
That is why you cannot think your way out of overthinking.
At some point, you have to trust that you have prepared enough.
You have to stop trying to guarantee the outcome.
You have to let people see you.
Not the safest version.
Not the most controlled version.
You.
And yes, that is risky.
Because if you show up fully and they still do not choose you, that can hurt.
But holding back has a cost too.
If the judges never really meet you, how can they choose you?
Preparation can bring you to the edge.
But it cannot make the leap for you.
At some point, you have to let go of control and trust that what is meant for you will not pass you by. ✨
