Leave a Bunch for Bobwhite!
In April, quail will start nesting in plants that grew last summer. Grazing management this winter is important to leave bunchgrasses for the nesting season next spring.
Ideal Management: Tall bunchgrasses
Heavy Grazing: Sparse tall bunchgrasses
Annual Burning: No tall bunchgrasses
Broomsedge bluestem (Andropogon virginicus) & little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) are ideal for nesting. Cattle don’t prefer these grasses after flowering. This lets them remain tall when grazed with the proper stocking rate.
