CAN OPENER
The British Army can opener was based on the much smaller World War Two US P38 can opener. Issued in the 24-hour ration (10 man and 4 man) packs. At one stage they were manufactured by W.P. Warren Engineering Co. Ltd, Birmingham, England. Since the introduction of boil in the bag rations in the 90’s, sadly the compo can opener has been phased out.
But how many still have a compo can opener on their key ring. Legend has it, the compo can opener was the most effective and useful piece of kit ever issued throughout the military.
It came in a small greaseproof envelope, with the instructions printed on it for easy use, unless you were a thick squaddie like me, it took me months to understand how to use it properly.

INSTRUCTIONS TO OPEN CAN: Place opener on the can with rim of can inside the slot. Hold between thumb and forefinger and twist forward to puncture. Repeat motion until can is open.
DID YOU KNOW?
The P-38 US opener coincidentally shares the same name with the Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter plane, which could allude to its fast performance. That’s what the Yanks say. Sorry to burst your bubble it might just be something to do with the fact that the P-38 is approximately (38 mm) long!!
Magic indestructible compo tin openers? Like most of you out there I’ve still got a few in my KFS drawer and they still work 30 years later, no I’m lying, but I wouldn’t know I haven’t been in the kitchen for years, that’s the wife’s domain. Wish I did though. It was much better than these fancy civvy can openers, those things last forever.
A front-line Infantry soldier’s life expectancy during the cold war in battle against a red army attack was nine seconds. So, I was told loads of times. A British Army issued compo tin opener is 40 years.
