This weekend, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum hosted a songwriter round honoring singer-songwriter David Olney. The program included tribute performances by Steve Earle, Mary Gauthier, Jaimee Harris and Jim Lauderdale.

Singer-songwriter Olney, who died in 2020, released more than two dozen albums during his five-decade career as both a solo artist and a member of the Nashville Jug Band and the X-Rays. His songs have been recorded by Kieran Kane, Del McCoury, Linda Ronstadt, Townes Van Zandt and Country Music Hall of Fame member Emmylou Harris. New West Records recently released Can’t Steal My Fire: The Songs of David Olney — a tribute album featuring Earle, Gauthier, Lauderdale, the McCrary Sisters, Buddy Miller, the SteelDrivers, Lucinda Williams and others.

In the early 1980s, he recorded two albums for Rounder Records with The X-Rays. The group appeared on Austin City Limits, opened for major acts, including Elvis Costello, and broke up in 1985.

Olney died of an apparent heart attack during a performance onstage at the 30A Songwriter Festival in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, on January 18, 2020, at the age of seventy-one. He was in the middle of his third song when he stopped, apologized and shut his eyes, according to fellow musician Scott Miller, who was accompanying Olney.

Parmalee, Country radio’s most played band of 2023, scored their 5th #1 single with “Gonna Love You.” (listen above) This marks the 4th consecutive #1 single for the band, who performed the song on Good Morning America and The Kelly Clarkson Show earlier this year.

“Having ‘Gonna Love You’ go #1 is special in so many ways,” the band said. “We took a shot with a song completely different from the previous three (we released), and it really connected. Also, this was the song we needed to help tell our story and ultimately film the music video. As difficult as it was on the video set, it was a way to move on, and now we can all celebrate this song and how far we’ve come.”

The North Carolina natives recently performed at the “Concert For Carolina” benefit, which raised more than $25 million for Hurricane Helene relief efforts. Parmalee is comprised of brothers Matt and Scott Thomas (lead vocals/guitar and drums, respectively), cousin Barry Knox (bass), and lifelong friend Josh McSwain (guitar/keyboard).

While the band is winding the year with another chart-topping single, they are already prepping for their recently announced “Fell In Love With A Cowgirl” Tour, which kicks off February 13 in Madison, WI. The tour, featuring special guest Avery Anna, will conclude on March 22 in Edmonton, AB, Canada.

“With new music coming early next year, there is energy and excitement around us and our whole team,” said lead singer Matt Thomas. “We wanted to bring that energy to our fans as soon as we could, so we decided to do a headline tour starting in Feb 2025. We’ll bring the party back to some of the cities we played on the Kane Brown tour as well as some cities we’ve never been to. Can’t wait to kick off 2025 with the Parmlee Famalee.”

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in conjunction with U.S. Homeland Security Investigations and Gibson officials, announced the seizure of over 3,000 counterfeit Gibson guitars with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price, had they been genuine, of $18,742,820.

CBP officers in coordination with HSI special agents and LASD investigators intercepted the suspected cargo arriving in ocean containers from Asia. CBP’s Consumer Products and Mass Merchandising Center of Excellence (CPMM) assisted in estimating the MSRP of the shipment. Nashville based Gibson confirmed that the guitars intercepted were in fact counterfeit, noting that legitimate Gibson guitars are only Made in the U.S.A.

“These fraudulent guitars may look and feel legitimate for unsuspecting consumers buying them from third party online sources, street markets, unauthorized retailers, and person-to-person transactions,” said Cheryl M. Davies, CBP Director of Field Operations in Los Angeles. “As we approach the busy Holiday shopping season, consumers should pay attention to where they are buying these goods and how much they are paying, and if is too good to be true it probably is.”

More counterfeit guitars seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

“We are grateful for the hard work that our U.S. CBP officers, HSI special agents, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department investigators are doing to stop counterfeiting,” adds Cesar Gueikian, CEO of Gibson. “Our partnership is designed to help every agency work together to protect consumers and our fans from being misled into counterfeits. Today’s announcement gives us hope that we are on the right track, working together as partners. To our music lovers and customers, no matter which American brand you decide buy, always buy direct from the source, or from authorized dealers. Our pledge is to protect the consumer and give them the tools to make the journey of playing guitar and making music the most amazing experience.”

“This is really emotional and personal for us not only because of the protection of our players, but because of our Gibson team at large, including the artisans at our craftories in Nashville, TN and Bozeman, MT, who are generations of American families that have dedicated their entire lives to handcrafting Gibson instruments,” adds Beth Heidt, Chief Marketing Officer at Gibson. “As Gibson celebrates its 130th anniversary this year, we are proud of our legacy of quality and craftsmanship, legendary music partnerships with our artists, and our efforts to promote and create more musicians that continue to shape the sounds of generations of musicians and music lovers across every genre.”
