When Laila Edwards would walk into a hockey rink as a kid, people would tell her she was in the wrong place. They'd point her toward the basketball court. Now, she's pointing herself toward a gold medal.
Meet Laila Edwards, the 22-year-old, 6'1" powerhouse from Cleveland who is officially the first Black woman EVER to make the U.S. Women's Olympic Hockey Team.
She went from being told she didn't belong, to dominating the sport. She won two national championships in college and is now set to wear the red, white, and blue on the world's biggest stage. She said all the microaggressions just gave her 'thicker skin' and fueled her determination.
This isn't just a win for her; it's a win for every little kid of color who has ever been told they don't belong.
