He reflected that "If you can’t be proud of your own success; whether as a person, or as a people, what can you be proud of?" making the point that in the absence of prosperity and freedom, people will often cling to whatever symbol of purpose they can find. It was a powerful reminder of the privileges that our country and way of life bestows upon each of us.
