In Hindu Dharma it is believed that a human being is born with three rna’s (debts), that must be repaid.

1. Deva-ṛṇa - debt to the gods : It is repaid by the performance of yajñas or Vedic sacrifices.If one is unable to perform yajñas, it may also be repaid by worship of the gods, fasting or other types of austerities.
2. Pitṛ-ṛṇa - debt to the ancestors : It is repaid by begetting children and doing śrāddhas or obsequial ceremonies.
3. Rṣi-ṛṇa - debt to the sages : It is repaid by svādhyāya and tapas.

Mahalaya Amavasya, also known as Sarva Pitri Amavasya, is a significant day in the Hindu faith that marks the end of Pitru Paksha - the fortnight dedicated to the remembrance of our departed ancestors and paying respects to them. śrāddha and tarpana are some rituals of offering oblations to the ancestors, deities and sages.
