“Colors of Imperial” 60 W x 36 H, Brushed Aluminum Panels x 12. Within the “Colors of Imperial,” I embrace the beat to the drum and the history of the Imperial Avenue District in San Diego. The area is colorful and full of life which extends out in front of the neighborhood shops. Imperial Avenue denotes an era when originally the street was known as U.S. Highway 80 and at one time served as the main route into San Diego from Arizona, Imperial County and El Cajon. Imperial Avenue is named in reference to the Imperial Valley and the Imperial Land Company, which was responsible for developing the agricultural, water-starved land east of San Diego in the early 1900s. The name reflects the development boom and agricultural expansion associated with that region during that era.
