Happy New Year! Photo taken at 7:23pm. Things slowly fell apart as the night marched on. 2 of 5 made it to see the ball drop. But, that’s a .400 average… not too shabby at all!
Winter is one of the biggest worries people have about moving here.
And I get it.
Indy does have winter. It can be cold, gray, and at times pretty harsh.
We don’t usually have snow on the ground all season, but there are stretches where it sticks around.
Each winter we have cold snaps, the occasional snow storm, and some ice.
It’s all part of it.
This isn’t a “light jacket all year” kind of place.
That said, here’s the honest part:
Winter here is real, but it’s also relatively short.
And compared to places way farther north, it’s manageable.
Funny enough, we were just over 100 miles into the Arctic Circle recently…
and the weather there was actually better than it was back home.
But, not for long. Our weather at home returned to normal pretty fast.
The weather in the Arctic Circle was relatively nice and would return to its normal (worse) soon.
So no, winter here won’t ruin your life.
But yes, you need to be prepared for it.
If you can handle a true Midwest winter, the payoff is everything that comes after it.
Because once spring hits, you’ll appreciate it in a way you never could without the contrast.
Is Indy a good place to live?
Honestly… that’s a hard question to answer.
And not because Indy doesn’t have a lot to offer but because the right answer is different for everyone.
Indy is big enough for major sports, cultural events, and a wide range of things to do.
You can find urban, suburban, and even rural lifestyles all within the same metro.
Downtown energy. Family-friendly suburbs. Quiet pockets that feel far removed but aren’t actually that far at all.
What surprises most people is the variety.
Different vibes, different rhythms, different ways life can feel depending on where you land.
And that’s why reading about Indy only gets you so far.
At the end of the day, no one can tell you if it’s a good place to live for you.
You have to experience it. Explore it.
See how it fits your lifestyle.
The good news?
Indy is large enough to fit a lot of different people but not so large that it swallows you whole.
It’s a place you can actually get to know.
And if you’re trying to figure out how Indy might fit you specifically… that’s always worth the conversation.
If you’re exploring Carmel with us, there’s a reason I might send you to a park that seems totally random on the map.
Carey Grove Park isn’t the biggest, flashiest, or most well-known spot in the city.
But, it sits inside a part of Carmel that feels very different from other areas.
And that difference matters when you’re trying to figure out where you want to live.
People think Carmel is one uniform place… like once you cross the city limits, everything feels the same.
But that’s not how any real city works, and Carmel is no exception.
East, Central, West…
Each pocket has its own personality, level of maturity, style of home, and day-to-day differences.
Carey Grove happens to sit in one of the older, more mature areas where the trees are bigger, the homes are a little older, and the vibe is calmer.
It’s nothing like Central Carmel.
And it’s definitely not like West Carmel.
So when I send you to a park like this, it’s not about the playground.
It’s about giving you a destination that drops you right in the middle of a specific version of Carmel so you can feel it.
Walk it. Drive it.
Notice the homes. Notice the streets.
Notice what everyday life actually looks like.
Because that’s the stuff no online search can teach you.
You can read all you want.
You can look at photos and maps. But until you experience a place in person, you don’t really know whether it fits you.
That’s why exploring matters so much.
And that’s exactly what our exploration app is built to do.
Point you to the right places so you can start developing those preferences for yourself and dial in the part of Carmel (or anywhere else) that truly feels like home.
How affordable is Indianapolis, really?
It’s a question so many people ask.
And the answer is a little more nuanced than people expect.
Daily life here feels pretty normal.
Groceries, utilities, gas… nothing is shockingly cheap, but nothing is shockingly expensive either.
It all sits really close to the national average, which is why so many people say Indy just feels easy to live in.
But the part that catches people off guard is housing.
Indy is absolutely more affordable than the big metros. D.C., Seattle, L.A., San Francisco
And yes, your money will go further here.
More square footage, more house, more of almost everything.
But some folks arrive thinking they’re about to get an unbelievable deal… like a $300K budget is going to get them a 5,000 sq ft dream home.
And yeah… that’s not the reality.
And once you start looking in the popular suburbs… Carmel, Zionsville, Fishers, parts of Indianapolis that everyone talks about… that surprise gets even bigger.
A $500K to $600K budget doesn’t stretch quite as far as people imagine.
It still goes further than many cities, but maybe not as far as they hoped.
Affordability is personal.
What feels reasonable to one person might feel tight to someone else.
But the biggest thing to understand is this…
Yes, Indianapolis is affordable compared to most major metros… but it’s not “dirt cheap.”
Not anymore.
And depending on where you’re looking, you might need to adjust expectations just a bit.
