What's the difference between Having a Business vs. Running a Business? ๐ค
The formula is simple, but ex*****on requires dedication.
๐ Today I got to reconnect with childhood friend Cole Hale. He's the Watch Director for family owned Reis-Nichols Jewelers.
โ๏ธ Cole is enthusiastic about sharing what he does and I asked him what the secret to his happiness is. "๐๐ฐ๐ฃ๐ฃ๐บ ๐ง๐ช๐ณ๐ด๐ต. ๐๐ฐ๐ณ๐ฌ ๐ด๐ฆ๐ค๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ฅ", he said before I could finish asking the question.
โ As a luxury watch dealer, Cole shared that ๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฑ๐ผ๐ฒ๐๐ปโ๐ ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฐ๐๐ ๐ผ๐ป ๐๐ฎ๐น๐ฒ๐. "๐๐ฆ๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ญ๐ฆ ๐ฃ๐ถ๐บ ๐ธ๐ข๐ต๐ค๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ด ๐ง๐ฐ๐ณ ๐ฅ๐ช๐ง๐ง๐ฆ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ต ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ข๐ด๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ด", he explained. He provides education and helps guide clients to a piece that speaks to them - regardless of the price.
๐ Cole gave me a tour of their impressive facility where they don't just sell fine jewelry, but also service and manufacture it.
๐ค I asked the head of their Service Department what the favorite part of his job is. Without hesitation he said "๐๐ฏ๐ฐ๐ธ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ข๐ต ๐ฎ๐บ ๐ธ๐ฐ๐ณ๐ฌ ๐ด๐ข๐ต๐ช๐ด๐ง๐ช๐ฆ๐ฅ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐ค๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ณ." He was sincere in his response, and I believed him.
๐ฅน I spoke with a gentlemen in the Refinishing Room. He'd been in the industry nearly 50 years. I asked him what his favorite part of the jobs is. He said that ๐ต๐ฒ ๐น๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ ๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฑ๐ผ๐ฒ๐ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ ๐ถ๐ ๐ฑ๐ผ๐ฒ๐๐ป'๐ ๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐น ๐น๐ถ๐ธ๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ธ. "๐๐ฉ๐ฆ๐บ ๐ข๐ฑ๐ฑ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ค๐ช๐ข๐ต๐ฆ ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐ต๐ข๐ฌ๐ฆ ๐ค๐ข๐ณ๐ฆ ๐ฐ๐ง ๐ฎ๐ฆ ๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ฆ", he said - almost drawing tears from a man who doesn't look as if he cries often.
โฆ๏ธ It's clear to me how this family owned business has been in operation for over 100 years.

How do you expect your customers to show up for youโฆ
If you don't show up for them? ๐ค
๐ Meet Gordon- owner and operator of Deja Brew Espresso Bar.
โ I came to find Gordon's establishment because his competition was inconsistent.
๐นThey open late and close early, without notice.
๐นSome days, they don't open at all.
โ Their mistake is expecting customers to adapt to and understand THEIR schedule. Rather than providing a service when their CUSTOMERS want it.
โ
Gordon, on the other hand, has only closed early 2 days in 4 years.
๐น Once when he had to be hospitalized.
๐น And the other when he injured himself at work.
๐งต He spent 20 years working in textiles and interestingly, helped make the sporting goods used in the movie Hoosiers.
๐จ๐ฆณ Gordon shared that this is his retirement and he doesn't need the income the cafรฉ provides him. In fact, he told me that he puts 100% of the profits back into the business.
He said "๐๐ฆ๐ต๐ช๐ณ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ต ๐ช๐ด๐ฏ'๐ต ๐ด๐ช๐ต๐ต๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐ช๐ฏ ๐ข ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ค๐ญ๐ช๐ฏ๐ฆ๐ณ ๐ธ๐ข๐ต๐ค๐ฉ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐ต๐ฆ๐ญ๐ฆ๐ท๐ช๐ด๐ช๐ฐ๐ฏ!" and boy is he right. When we lose our purpose in life, we begin to deteriorate rapidly.
๐ค Gordon could have chosen to have a casual attitude about his cafรฉ - yet he continues to apply the lessons he has learned in business. The most important in his words, "๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐ค๐ข๐ณ๐ฆ ๐ฐ๐ง ๐ฉ๐ช๐ด ๐ค๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ด."
๐ฏ He has chosen to show up for his customers, rather than expecting they show up for him.
