The word "projection" means to extent outward; or (go) beyond. To project your voice means to extend the sound of your voice from where you stand to the furthest wall you see.

Here is a tip:
Pretend you are palming a baseball and you have to throw it far so nobody finds it. You arch your wrist in preperation to throw and swooshhhhhhhh through the air it gooooooes. The ball represents the sound going forward while the preparation is your breath. Mimiking this approach with a great breath beforehand will help with controlling your sound and making your voice heard.

Thank you for the question in my inbox.
I would like to share this because I get questions like this all the time.

Q: How can I sing and do runs like Beyonce?

A: Beyonce is, what I am, and what most singers who teach are, called a Trained Singer. What I mean is, When Beyonce was young, she probably was in her school choir just as alot of us were for extre credit or as an activity. But Beyonce probably liked her choir class more than others. The exercizes the teacher gives in the classroom such as scales (Do, Re, Mi, Fa Sol), and diction (lalalala, ti, ta, terryterry) are fun for children to laugh and have a break from learning. Although exercizes like these are mainly for classroom usage, when we get older they come in handy to improve our craft. Beyonce may have taken these exercizes and practiced, and practiced and practiced them until she perfected them, therefore trained herself in knowing her scales backward and forward.

"Runs, or Riffs" in music language are called Trills. Its when you move from one note to the other in a flutter motion using your vocal chords. Trills are the manipulations of scale patterns used with your own ability and understanding of scales. Learning scale patterns is easy and fun if you do not let it intimidate you that you cannnot make your voice flutter overnight. It is a process. However the more you do them, the faster and easier it becomes.

If you have an interest in learning scales, please feel free to inquire about voice lessons within.

Singers dont realize they do this but when you were kids singing in your school choir, it wasnt important to be pitch perfect. Your teacher would keep playing and you would keep singing.

As we grow into adults, our voice changes and so should our technique. What I mean is when we dont hit the notes head on, it is noticable. It may sound like you are sliding up to the note, for instance, when you are singing higher than normal. Here is a trick.
Try picturing that you are about to parachute from a high place. You bend your legs to get ready, then JUMP.
As you are gliding thru the air you feel free, right? Then, you end the flight by landing on the ground with both feet.
The consept is the same. The jump is the breath you take before you sing. It prepares you to land on top of the note rather than climbing a mountain of notes to reach the note you want. Try it.

The first mistake singers make is run out of air during a song. The director is there to guide you in singing, not breathing. You cannot talk, or sing without breathing. Breathing during singing is an artform. It includes control, timing and the dramatic undertones. You have to take in enough breath in order to sustain your notes so you dont go flat, also to ensure the song you sing is memorable all the way til the end.
