When a person has eczema, the body's immune system mistakes substances that are normally harmless for foreign invaders.

The immune system responds by creating antibodies and releasing chemicals known as histamines, which lead to inflammation and irritation of the skin.

In people with eczema, this inflammatory reaction is ongoing - even when there's no infection or other obvious reason for it.

In response to inflammation, skin can become dry and red, cracked, scaly or blistered. It may burn or itch severely.

In some cases, the reaction triggers a thickening of the skin (lichenification), making affected areas more prone to bacterial infection.
