Mary Waters was an Irish immigrant who became one of the most respected and skilled nurses in Philadelphia during the American Revolutionary War. Arriving in America before the conflict, she dedicated herself to caregiving at a time when military nursing was unorganized and highly dangerous. Waters worked closely with Dr. Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and a leading physician of the Continental Army. She managed makeshift hospital wards, implemented strict sanitation measures, and treated soldiers suffering from battlefield wounds and deadly epidemics like yellow fever and typhus.

Her exceptional medical competence and sharp intellect earned her the deep admiration of the Philadelphia medical establishment. Dr. Rush held her in such high regard that he considered her an equal in clinical observation, noting her unique ability to diagnose illnesses and manage patient care effectively. In 1791, Rush even drafted biographical notes intended for a book about her life, recognizing that her contributions to early American medicine deserved historical preservation. Though she lacked formal institutional training, Waters's legacy endures as a pioneer who elevated the standards of wartime nursing and proved the vital role of women in the survival of the early Republic.
