NROL-97 Launch
Rounding out a busy day a morning launch from SLC #40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station of the SpaceX Crew-13 launch, Vandenberg Space Force Base, Ca followed it up launching Transporter 18. Kennedy Space Center completed the trifecta a few minutes before midnite launching NROL-97 for one of its Department of Defense customers (NRO/National Reconnaissance Office) from SLC 39A in less than good weather
Low hanging clouds encapsulated all local areas with viewers wanting to see the 2 core returns and listen for the trademark sonic booms as one of the 2 launch pads were busy again.
The Landing Zone at SLC # 40 had received the core from Crew-13 this morning.
As typical with any NRO launch, little is publicly known about the contents, except the satellite was built by NRO and obtained with the NSSL (National Security Space Launch) program. This will be the 4th NRO satellite launched.
NROL missions are how the U.S. intelligence community fields space-based reconnaissance, and using a heavy-lift vehicle rather than a workhorse Falcon 9 is a signal in itself. It suggests either a large or heavy satellite, a high-energy destination, or both. It also shows how firmly commercial launch has become part of national security space, with the Space Force and NRO running missions through a shared range with a NASA crew launch the same day.
Previous NROL missions can be followed on the public website N2YO.com
