I’m spending Thanksgiving day w/my deer family, although the nutrition has been on the meager side. Found buck brush berries in morphed out clusters, when they are usually single berries, & knowing deer & birds eat them gave them a try. 1st second tasted great, followed by an “oh, you’de better look this up” bitterness. As I expected, they’re mildly toxic, & poisonous in vast quantities.

Setting up for the 3rd time between stillhunting, I broke down and finished most of a small trail mix packet. Found the reason my pack was damper than it should have been a couple days ago, as the 2 oz of water ration leaked out. Will be a dry afternoon.

Deer are not moving at all yet, as they wore themselves out yesterday pm. The only deer I’ve seen was a mature buck I got up at 32y. I hadn’t tightened the screws down yet & was picking my way through the honeysuckle, buck brush, & briars instead of feeling my way through them, & he was up before I saw him. I had the sun behind me & he couldn’t make me out, but a clump of tall johnson grass blocked a decent shot. I bleated softly a couple times & had his eyes relaxed & closing from the sun on his face after a couple minutes, but the “bajevies” or an errant breeze gave me up & he vanished.
Getting ready to slide into a spot I may spend the rest of the day in.
