As summer begins, we're highlighting a unique item from the Mary Talmage Local History Room: The New Long Island: A Handbook of Summer Travel (1879) by William M. Laffan.

Published as a guide for visitors to Long Island's resorts and seaside communities, this rare volume features illustrations of destinations, attractions, and recreational activities that drew travelers to the island over 150 years ago.

The book offers a glimpse into Long Island's early tourism and how people spent their summers in the late nineteenth century. As residents and visitors continue to enjoy Long Island's beaches, parks, and waterfront communities today, this book reminds us of Long Island's enduring appeal as a summer destination.
