KIPP Texas takes attendance very seriously. Being present in school every day is the foundation for student achievement and academic success. If students are not in school, they miss what is being taught and are at risk of lower academic performance. When absences become a pattern or a chronic issue, students can fall behind and face academic struggles as well as challenges beyond the classroom.

As a reminder, Texas state law, the Texas Education Code § 25.092, states that students in Kindergarten through 12th grade who miss 10% or more of school (including both excused or unexcused absences) can lose credit for their courses or be held back a grade. Missing 10% of school is equivalent to missing just two days per month.

If your child misses 10% of the school days but attends at least 80% of the school days, they may still earn credit by completing a plan approved by the principal. Credit will be removed after the 10% threshold is crossed. We’ll meet with you to create a required principal’s plan and determine the best route for your student to recover credit.

Important 2026–2027 School Supply Update for 5th Grade

Next school year, our 5th-grade students will not bring backpacks to school. Instead, they will need a large 3-ring zipper binder with multiple pockets, a shoulder strap, and an O-ring closure. This binder may be purchased at local stores or online.
