The case of Melissa Lucio continues to divide opinions across Texas and the nation.

In 2008, Melissa Lucio was convicted and sentenced to death after prosecutors alleged she abused and killed her 2-year-old daughter, Mariah Alvarez. Lucio has consistently maintained that her daughter died after an accidental fall down a flight of stairs, and in recent years her attorneys have pointed to new medical evidence and allegations that favorable evidence was withheld during her trial.

Her ex*****on was halted in 2022, and the courts continue to review her case.

🚨 BREAKING UPDATE: FAMILY ARGUMENT TURNS DEADLY — MAN CHARGED WITH FELONY MURDER AFTER DEADLY KLEIN APARTMENT FIRE

HARRIS COUNTY, TX — A tragic overnight apartment fire that claimed one life and left multiple people injured is now being investigated as an intentional act, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies, along with multiple fire departments and first responders, were dispatched around 1:30 a.m. Monday to the Cypresswood Apartments in the 4600 block of Cypresswood Drive, where they found a building fully engulfed in flames.

Several residents were injured during the blaze. Andrew Atwater, 40, was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. His mother suffered serious injuries, while a 3-year-old child living in a neighboring apartment sustained extensive burn injuries. Several other residents were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Following an investigation, the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office determined the fire may have been intentionally set.

Investigators identified Matthew Atwater, who lived in the apartment with Andrew Atwater and their mother, as the alleged suspect. Detectives say he had been involved in an argument with family members earlier in the evening and allegedly set the fire out of anger.

Matthew Atwater has been charged with Felony Murder, with Arson serving as the underlying offense, and has been booked into the Harris County Jail. Authorities say additional charges are possible as the investigation continues.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit and the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office continue to investigate the case.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
