“Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.” Psalm 34:19 (NKJV) It has often been said that if it is not one thing then it is another when describing the many trials of life. Someone even went as far to say that if it is not one thing it’s a million. For those who have never faced hardship, heartache, or hindrances this psalm may be of little assistance to you at this particular time. Rest assured if it is not for you now, there will come a time when it will need to be remembered. The text speaks of the afflictions of the righteous. The righteous in the context of our devotional passage are “those who conform to God’s standard.” In the context of the New Testament the righteous are those who accept Jesus Christ as Lord, exchanging their sin for His righteousness and as a result are positionally in “right standing” with God. (See II Corinthians 5:21) Afflictions take on various shades of definition but here primarily it means something bad, evil, or “misery, adversity, calamity, or grief.” Jesus introduces us to the New Testament concept of this idea when He says, “These things I have spoken to you that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (NKJV) Therefore “affliction” is universal in its nature that confronts the righteous of God. However, be not dismayed because we serve a God who specializes in delivering His own. It is clear that afflictions go along with the territory if you are indeed the righteousness of God. But if you will allow Him to, God will always work things out for our good and His glory. He is a strong deliverer. “Then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment.” II Peter 2:9 (NKJV) So the question is what do you need to be delivered from? God has the power to deliver us from all of our afflictions. Is it a bad habit that you can’t seem to break? Maybe it is an illicit soul tie that you have with someone that you can’t break on your own. Furthermore, could it be a “secret” sin that you know if anyone ever found out it would cost you your respect and standing in the church or your community. The passage leaves no stone unturned; the Lord can and will deliver us from them all. What is all? All is simply all, including everything and excluding nothing. He will deliver us from them all!
