New employees get hurt on the job at a higher rate than anyone else on your team, and it's not close. Studies show workers are up to six times more likely to be injured in their first 30 days, with roughly 1 in 8 of those injuries happening on day one.
It's rarely about carelessness. New hires are still learning where the hazards are, juggling more information than they can process at once, and often reluctant to ask questions or slow down a task they feel pressure to get right quickly.
A few things that make a real difference: staged onboarding that doesn't try to cover everything on day one, a buddy system pairing new hires with experienced staff, and frequent early check-ins where someone actually asks how it's going rather than assuming no news is good news.
