Scenes from The History and Future of the LULAC Council 60 Clubhouse.
Thank you to everyone who joined us to explore the legacy and continued preservation of the historic LULAC Council 60 Clubhouse, an enduring landmark of Latino civic leadership and community building.
Geraldina Wise’s practice exists at the intersection of art, architecture, and environmental advocacy. A multi-disciplinary feminist artist and recipient of Houston’s 2023 Mayor’s Hispanic Heritage Art in the Community Award, her work is deeply rooted in Maya intellectual heritage and a lifelong commitment to cultural preservation.
From a 25-year architecture career to immersive study at the Glassell School of Art, Geraldina’s journey reflects a return to art as patrimony, something to be safeguarded for future generations. Her Modular Woman concept, introduced in Paris, reclaims space, proportion, and power through a lens of environmental and feminist consciousness.
Through natural materials, sustainable pigments, and global dialogue, she creates work that records time and honors ancestry while advocating for collective responsibility.
Geraldina Wise is featured on the Creators Wall as part of Nuestro Ambiente, celebrating visionary leaders shaping culture, community, and the future of Houston through March 27.
Tony Diaz, widely known as El Librotraficante, has dedicated his career to amplifying Latino voices and advancing cultural representation through the written word. As a writer, activist, and founder of Nuestra Palabra: Latino Writers Having Their Say, Diaz has helped transform Houston’s literary landscape, building platforms that champion education, civic engagement, and community cultural capital.
From organizing one of Texas’ largest Latino book festivals to leading the nationally recognized Librotraficante movement in defense of Mexican American Studies, his work reflects a steadfast commitment to intellectual freedom and access to stories that shape identity.
Today, his influence continues across media, education, and public service, reinforcing the power of literature as both a cultural archive and a catalyst for change. Diaz is featured on the Creators Wall as part of Nuestro Ambiente, honoring leaders whose work continues to define Houston’s cultural future.
Nuestro Ambiente is now on view at Architecture Center Houston extended through March 27.
