In a society that is hyper-focused on the majority population, we must constantly reiterate to Black kids how vital their essence is in this world. And it’s easy to do that when we create books that resembles their existence. I remember growing up and marveling at the few toys, television shows, and books that honored my Black features. And I’m reminded of this feeling of acceptance when I started writing books for young Black children to indulge in. I want kids to understand that the world is diverse and made up of all kinds of wonderful people, and I also want to make sure they see themselves in what they are reading. 🤎

Here’s to 2024 ✨

#2024

Around this time of year, I find myself turning inward, having less to say and more to think about. I find myself wanting to soften into this weird, timeless period in between Christmas and New Year’s, where the days blend together. I find myself letting myself dream more, and when that harsh little voice enters my mind, letting it be there without needing to judge it. I find myself not wanting to consume or create much, but allowing whatever is arising to the surface to pop up, and maintaining enough spaciousness for that to be possible.

And so, in the spirit of wanting to say less, I thought I could share with you the questions I’ve been sitting with in the last few days, and we could reflect together. As I just typed that, an image came to mind of each of us in our own little homes, rooms, corners, spread across the globe with a journal in hand, jotting down our thoughts as we explore our inner world.
