Thousands of jobs will soon be done faster, better, more efficiently, and at a far lower cost than humans can ever deliver.

After traveling for more than 24 hours and arriving at my hotel past 1 a.m., I was hungry and needed food.

So I opened my AliPay app and placed an order. The front desk told me the food would be delivered by a robot, and I was eager to see how it would work.

To my surprise, a few minutes later, my room phone rang. My food was outside.

But this experience left me with a bigger question: Who really wins in the battle between robots and human labor?

This robot costs less than $1,000 and can be powered with less than $50 worth of electricity per month. That means the total purchase and running cost for one year is far less than the cost of keeping one employee in the U.S. or other advanced economies for one month.

One thing is certain: many companies will adopt these technologies because the numbers are too attractive to ignore.

But the bigger question is this:

Are Western governments prepared for the social unrest that could come from the massive layoffs that may soon hit low-wage jobs?

AI and robotics are not coming. They are already here.
